Twinzers

Inspired by the brilliant Wil Jobson and his efforts to bring the Twinzer to the world, my twinzers are a homage to his genius. For a few brief moments in 2005, I was able to spend some time with Wil in my shaping room in Santa Cruz, where I watched him shape a few dozen boards for Mandala. Most of what he did was very precise, with subtle concaves and 99% of the shaping performed by a highly-modded Hitachi with some custom parts that he machined himself. Planer straight to screen, very advanced work that reflected years of thoughtful design and execution.

Years later I dug up my notes from those shaping sessions and combined Wil’s Twinzer design concepts with my own fin templates, while integrating some golden ratio fin placements and spacial relationships. My goal has been to continue Wil’s work in creating a more efficient twin fin design, with more drive and less cavitation than the traditional twin fin set up. The results have been working extremely well across a multitude of designs, from eggs to fish, to step-up boards meant for targeting larger surf.

I hope that one day I’ll cross paths with Wil (he’s a very hard man to find) and I can show him all of my inspired designs. Until then, I’ll keep the torch lit and keep these small dreams alive.
